the crystal project

Fingerprint - Jo Klima - Maps to Herself

I’m embarking on a new heART project that for now I am nicknaming ‘the crystal project’, and to describe it briefly it’s a way for me to work more closely with some of the crystals I’m strongly drawn to and to learn more about my own personal experiences with them, and what they have to share with me.

Shortly before beginning this blog in November 2013 was when I first started becoming intrigued by the power and energy of crystals. This was through receiving a crystal healing which I decided to do because I felt like there were many blockages to what I wanted to create and bring into my life. A lot of shifts took place within my chakras and belief systems, and it didn’t take long for new opportunities and experiences to begin to show up for me. I was given a selection of crystals at the end of the session, and so my curiosity (read: obsession) took hold.

A couple of months later I was travelling in New Zealand and I found a wonderful crystal shop just outside of Auckland. Until this point I’d never really been in a place quite like it before. I purchased what is still my most treasured crystal, a small fluorite point. It’s been with me on every adventure since and recently spent a couple of months down in Canberra with my partner as a nice reminder of home. I still pick out a crystal or two on each trip to a new place as a memento, most recently a Charoite and Malachite stone from New York.

Since the visit to NZ and the discovery of an amazing local crystal wholesaler, my collection has grown much larger. Crystals surround me at home and in my studio, they adorn my body, and come with me wherever I go. But I’ve noticed that with having so many more now, I haven’t developed as close of a connection with a large number of them. Foremost, this project is a way for me to do that. But I have also felt drawn to creating art which reflects what I see as the spirit or world within that crystal. So that is what has led me to ‘the crystal project’.

While I haven’t yet begin working on the final artworks just yet, I am experimenting more with different mediums, textures and marks as a way to find some new territory that may find it’s way into this art project. You never know how some colours or mediums will interact with each other until you play with their infinite possibilities. The artwork above, called ‘Fingerprint’, is one such exploration. I’m excited to work more on this passion project and share more of my stories and discoveries with you soon.

connect with divine source

Connect with Divine Source - Jo Klima - Maps to Herself

My second intention for this period between Equinox and Solstice which I picked to demonstrate in Amulet is ‘connect with divine source’. Over the last few months I’ve been hearing and listening to messages I’ve received from my inner guides which has developed into me trusting it even more. I regularly take notice of other messages around me. Like when and where I find feathers, prisms of rainbow light, a new opportunity opening up and moments I feel deep gratitude and other subtle clues.

One of the things I’ve noticed when I’m called to act on something like a particular project, and I feel it’s the right time, is I’ll receive little fragments throughout my day or week without really having to think about or focus on it intently, as long as I just write a note down before I forget it. I usually receive this information like a recording of myself, either as visual and sound or just sound, along with a feeling of confidence in my gut.

These flashes of insight are what I’ve come to act upon when deciding what to do next, and when I follow them they seem to work out well, or I come to understand I’ve had a good experience to learn from. It’s a totally different feeling to trying to make up ideas in my head (of which there are plenty) and something I need to force to make happen. It never really feels right even though it makes logical sense. When I don’t get these insights, it’s usually when I’ve been slack in my art or spiritual practice or just needing to rest and prioritise something else in my life.

As part of my intention I want to take my own spiritual practice deeper with trying different forms of meditation and methods, to see what resonates with me and helps strengthen my ability to receive the type of clarity and guidance I’ve experienced, as well as opening up to new channels of guidance.

step into my power

Intentions are the starting point and the creative power behind anything you desire to bring into your life, or release from your life. When I created Amulet the core focus was around helping others to manifest their intention, while also stepping into their creative flow.

One of my intentions which I demonstrated in the workshop is ‘step into my power’. What this means is that I am ready to explore more of my potential, to let fear come along for the ride instead of letting it hold me back, and to truly embrace those butterflies and doubts and do what I’m guided to do.

Since creating this artwork which invokes the powerful energy of goddess Freyja, the spirit of the Tiger, the element of Fire, and alchemical symbols of the Sun, Mars and Jupiter; I have received even more guidance and messages which have helped me get clear on my next steps in really feeling into my gut and my natural instinct, and to have more courage to speak my truth. Creating the workshop was already a huge step for me with this intention and I’ll continue to embrace that and expand on the gifts that I can offer the world.

energy waves

Jo Klima - Maps to Herself

The last couple of months have been such a strange experience for me. I’ve felt a little like a pendulum swinging back and forth between two different energetic spaces. On one end is a place of clarity, in the other a place of ‘oh shit, what am I doing’. And during this time, which I did feel was an opportunity for me to just step back for a little while until I felt aligned with my next step, I suddenly had more space for bringing my focus onto something else, my own wellness and health, and self-care became my biggest priority.

I first went into the year thinking that I’d get stuck into new projects and ideas straight away, but the universe had a different plan. I began to look at multiple areas of my health which led me to make some significant decisions and changes and having a better understanding of what I’m putting in and on my body. I feel like I really needed to go through this process to set myself up for a much healthier year ahead which is bound to test my commitment to myself, which I will be much better prepared for.

As business owners, our self-care can often go out the window when things get busy, but I’m tired (literally) of having to push myself to do what I want to do when I don’t physically feel energised and vital. So I can actually see that not having a clear plan at the start of the year with my work allowed me to prioritize other parts of my life. And now as we’ve leaped into March, I feel more capable, energized, confident and ready to jump into my next project.

The artwork above reminds me that it’s ok if you float between higher and lower vibrations while you work out your own path ahead, or feel like you’re in the middle, in a fog. Each one is important to learn from, and they are both full of colour and meaningful experiences. The blessing is you just get to be you and do what you need to do in each moment of each day.

new year words

One of my favourite things to do, and I know a lot of you are with me, to celebrate a gorgeous new year is to set new intentions and pick my word/s of the year. I tend to pick three that encompass what I’d like to bring into my year. Last year they were Energy, Opportunity and Implement, which I feel really did guide me beautifully into making choices and learning what I needed to learn to bring about many of the changes and goals I desired.

2016 has a whole different energy to me. I feel like the path ahead is a little less certain (partly why I’ve chosen my first word) but allowing it to unfold and trusting that it will be ok is important. This year feels like it’s wide open to go in any direction. I’m excited to see where it goes! Here’s a little peek into the words I’ve chosen and why.

Clarity - Word of the Year 2016 - Maps to Herself

After making some significant changes in my business in 2015, I’m stepping into this year with more space to explore new projects, new art, new collaborations, and really, anything is possible. I want to bring forth more clarity in which direction to go, how I can bring out the best in myself, and what I can create for my community.

Freedom - Word of the Year 2016 - Maps to Herself

This word has been coming up for a couple of months now, I shared a little about what it means in my last post, but I feel a strong desire to dig deeper into what freedom looks like for me and how I can live my life by my own rules, not ones that have been ingrained in me as I’ve grown up.

Spirit - Word of the Year 2016 - Maps to Herself

My spiritual practice over the last couple of years has been sidelined much more than I’d hoped so I am devoting myself to making it more of a priority this year, learning more about the ways I connect with my intuition, higher self, spirit guides and the universe, and creating a daily spiritual practice that aligns with that.

Interested in a free printable graphic of your word of the year? Last year I had almost 200 requests for these, so amazing! All you need to do is comment before the 19th of January with your word or words and which colour you’d like from the examples above (sorry, no custom colour requests) and I’ll send you a high res graphic next week to print and stick up on your wall, vision board or in your journal as a reminder. The email you include in the comment will be where I send your graphic.

May all your words come to life in 2016!

*Comments are now closed, thank you everyone!

let your free spirit fly

Let Your Free Spirit Fly - Jo Klima - Maps to Herself

Let your free spirit fly. What would this phrase mean to you? I feel like many of us don’t actually allow ourselves to do this, simply because we feel there are so many reasons that it’s not possible, or ‘responsible’. Relationships, jobs, money, health. If you really wanted to take off on an adventure for months, how many things could you put on that list of why it’s not possible? I’m not saying jetting off overseas is the only way, but even if you wanted an extra few weeks to retreat or work on a special creative project, you may have many similar things blocking you from thinking you are able to do that.

There are many moments while travelling that I have the experience of feeling free, but what I’d really love is to encapsulate that into every day of my life, not just a few weeks of the year. Stepping back from client work has given me this feeling more abundantly in the last few months, and expressing my creativity in different ways is such a crucial part of this. It was what I needed, and it has allowed by inner spirit to feel more free.

What I want you to think about however, is what on that list of reasons for ‘not being able to do something for yourself’ is due to other people, or other situations and circumstances. Do you think your kids won’t survive without you, or a partner doesn’t want you to spend money on a solo adventure, or that you’ll annoy someone, or there’s noone to take care of things the way that you would. I will take a wild stab in the dark that most of the things you worry about happening wouldn’t happen, or not in the way you fear. Maybe the other person will actually surprise you and be supportive, your kids will be happy and having fun, your work colleagues handle your share of the work just fine. What you may find is that your biggest issue is letting go of things being done ‘your way’. But they will be done however they get done, and by then you’ll have had your time to explore, retreat, create or whatever it really is that helps your free spirit fly, that even if things didn’t go perfectly in your absence it won’t be such a big deal.

So go on, how can you devote more time to doing this for yourself and your spirit, and when will you let it happen? Don’t hold back on that part of yourself that craves freedom, adventure, retreating, slowing down, changing things up or taking a bigger risk. If you’re doing it for the right reasons and in the spirit of love for yourself, it will be an incredible gift to your inner spirit, and you won’t want to go another minute without tapping into that, or another day of not inviting your free spirit to stretch her wings and fly.
